Filming Blog: The First Day

Image
On Saturday, November 14th, my group and I filmed our music video. I arrived at Keren’s house at ten in morning to film my shots and any other shot we needed that could be filmed that day. We chose Keren’s house since it was a bit more ideal to film at her house at the time. Each of us had our costumes on, which were pajamas. Since I had already had a vision of how I wanted my scene to go, my group and I began preparing for the scene so that it would play out well. It was hard in the beginning, lip-syncing awkwardly in front of my friends; however, I found myself getting more comfortable as they kind of cheered me on when I was doing my part of the film. This made the filming process fun and real, taking off a bit of the stress I previously had.   We filmed the same shot multiple times to create the vision we all had.  My scene was a shot of two different versions of me staring at each other through a mirror. My scene was an over-the-shoulder shot.   I sat in ...

Planning storyboard for my Music video

Image
First scene- A shot of the title of our song displayed over a picture of a house. Second scene- the camera begins to zoom into a specific window. This represents Keren’s "room", the setting in which we will film the rest of the video. Third scene- the camera pans around the room to show all the actors in their positions. We are contemplating whether or not to make the actors frozen in place until the music picks up and then lyrics begin. Fourth scene- the camera spins around to Mya sitting in front of the mirror. She is in her pajamas, doing her makeup & looking at her reflection. Her reflection is doing something different, however. Her reflection is in her glammed up outfit, pertaining to her aesthetic, and she is admiring herself as she lip-syncs the lyrics. Fifth scene- camera spins around to Dezyrae sitting on a bench in the room. She is on the phone & lip-syncing the lyrics. Sixth scene- the camera goes into a wall and comes back the other way to give the effect...

Planning for my Music Video

Image
Song The song we decided to do is Positions by Ariana Grande. We first chose this song because we all liked it. We all also had plenty of ideas on what we could do for the video. This made Positions seem like the "perfect" song. Costumes For our costumes, we decided to use different aesthetics. Dezyrae's aesthetic was boujee/ girly. She had basically wore a girly outfit with boujee sunglasses and accessories. Keren's aesthetic was "soft girl". Soft girl is a fashion style, popular among some young women on social media, based on a deliberately cutesy, feminine look. It often features pink and yellow colors, floral and heart patterns, oversized sweaters and plaid skirts, and heavy blush makeup. Mya's aesthetic was edgy. This aesthetic normally consists of dark clothing, silver jewelry, and bold makeup. Sarayah's aesthetic was Indie. This aesthetic is a bright, colorful style usually involving oversized jeans, large hoodies, and small shirts. Location ...

Research Blog: Music Video Conventions

Image
For this project, we choose the song Positions by Ariana Grande. This song qualifies to be in both the Pop and Contemporary R&B genre of music. In the video for the song, the main conventions for the video was the camera angles, and camera movement. Along with other music videos, it uses these conventions are used to make to music video more appealing the viewers. In the video, there are transitions that show Ariana "flipping" from one room to another. The camera movement for this, like a circular motion ito transition to another setting. This effect that they used, was to show her duality between being a woman doing her own things, getting it done and being independent, then transitioning to her showing that she can be there for the people she loves, and vulnerable. With our video we are going to try and implement those same concepts, with the transitions like the ones used in the video. After the video for the song came out, a new TikTok trend was created. In this trend...

Introduction to the Music Video Project

Image
For my music video project, I chose to work in a group. I am working with Keren Casseus, Sarayah, and Dezyrae. When it came to who I was working with, I took some time to think about it. The project was posted before it was explained to the class, so Keren and some other classmates began discussing song ideas, putting together groups, etc. Keren had automatically placed me in a group chat with two other girls and I am grateful for that. I tend to overanalyze many situations and I just always want my product to be as perfect as possible. While it has its pros, it has many cons as well; and, with a project this big, I knew I would need a bit of help. There was a part of me, however, that was just unsure of being a part of a group. When it comes to any sort of art, I always have a vision and it frustrates me when that vision is not being portrayed how I want it to. It also comes down to my confidence in front of others. To me, acting is hard, even posing for pictures is hard for me b...

Critical Reflection Questions- Commercial Project

Image
  1. My product uses conventions by mimicking a certain camera movement that H&M often uses. In H&M commercials, a tracking shot is very common. I mimicked this in my commercial by following one of my actors from behind as they walk towards the dining table. This is a great technique as it focuses more on the clothing rather than the action the actor is committing. Another convention I used was filming the actors in a natural setting. In many of the H&M commercials, there are a lot of scenes where the actors are being candid, doing normal activities. I exhibited that in my commercial; however, I was a bit more candid. This correlates with how I challenged certain conventions. Since I was a bit more casual, it seems as though the focus of the commercial was less on the clothing. This is because, in some scenes, the actors would somewhat strut as naturally as possible in the H&M clothing. I did not exactly do that in my commercial. My product represents social groups ...

Commercial Blog: H&M Fall Season 2020: Spread Love and Give Thanks.

Image
The process for my H&M commercial was a very educational one. I have learned so much from this experience and I am grateful for it. I learned how a filming process should go. Now, I know that any type of (professional) film does not just so straight to the filming. It is built up in a smooth and thought out manner. For example, a commercial begins with a product and an idea on how one may want to represent this product. Next is the planning, which would be the storyboard. I had no idea big time films started off as quickly-drawn, comic-style pitches. At first glance, I thought doing the storyboard before filming my commercial would be a waste of time. However, when I actually began filming, I found myself remembering the storyboard comic and having a clear image on how I wanted the commercial to go. This made the filming process run smoother and quicker. In all honesty, I was not too confident in the way the video was going. I felt dissatisfied with the shots, the angles, the lack ...

Editing Blog: Portraying My Image

Image
I used the editing software, known as iMovie, to edit my H&M commercial. I had originally filmed the scenes on my aunt’s phone due to her better quality. So, I began by emailing the clips to my iPad. This was where I was going to do all of the editing to reach my final product. I continued my editing process by placing each clip in the correct order. Since I already had the storyboard and a vision in my head on how I wanted the commercial to look, it was pretty easy putting the clips together to fit the story line. Next, I cut the clips to fit the 30 seconds and to my liking. Once the clips were put together the way I liked, I began looking for a possible filter, provided by iMovie, to use. Because of the image I had in my head of how the commercial would look, I felt the original lighting did not suit the image I was trying to portray. So, I began looking for an iMovie filter that gave off the fall/autumn vibe I was going for. However, upon searching, I found iMovie had a lack of ...

Filming Blog: My Aunt’s House

Image
On Sunday, November 1st, I filmed my H&M commercial. I arrived at my aunt’s house at noon to film the shots I needed with my actors. I had chosen my Aunt Alejandra’s house since she had the type of family-style dining table that I envisioned for my commercial. Each actor had a piece of clothing from the H&M brand and the appropriate make up on. Since I had already had a vision of how I wanted the scenes to go, I began giving my actors instructions on what they should be doing so that the scene plays out well. It was hard getting the exact scenes that I wanted; however, the acting was genuine. This made the filming process fun and real, taking off a bit of the stress I previously had. We made a Thanksgiving dinner as my theme for the commercial was Thanksgiving to show the actors representing H&M’s fall collection. The first scene was an overhead shot of the food we had prepared. The actors would grab the food and it would then proceed to the next scene, which was a tra...
